Qarib
The qarib was the Khinasi ship which is the direct predecessor of the coaster. This small, 40-foot boat has commonly sailed along the coasts, where it still serves fishermen, pearl divers, merchants, and the shore-dwelling pirates who raid them. The hull is stitched with a sturdy cord. It is lateen-rigged with a tapered prow and stern. The rudder is typically mounted on the side.
The qarib is a medieval technology ship and was widely sailed in centuries past. Both Anuireans and Brecht have learned from this vessel, and adopted the use of lateen sails and other techniques from their experience with this small ship. In addition to being the progenitor of the coaster, the Brecht have also combined many aspects of the qarib in their own design of the caravel.
The qarib is no longer built in Khinasi having been replaced by the coaster for trade and fishing on the one hand, and by the dhow when a trading in more dangerous waters and as a light warship on the other. The qarib is still widely in use.
