Typical Dialogue:
"Your Grace, the Hierarch may give good counsel regarding the faith, but his actions antagonize the nobles, who as you know are devoted to Haelyn themselves. How can it be that what serves Haelyn must so distress his servants?"
"You have little choice, Your Grace, but to graciously receive the Archduke's envoys. Without Boeruine we are unable to resist the goblins, and little prevents the Archduke from siezing your temporal throne if he wants it."
"Yes, Your Grace, the foresters and miners are happy with the prosperity of the guilds, but they serve foreign guilders, guilders with no attachment to Your Grace's realm."
"Noble Cunningham, if you go ahead with this contract, use a sufficient portion of the funds to see new trees planted. Recently, one of the druids told me that if there be two trees planted for each cut down, it pleaseth the Old Father of the Forests."

[top]Biography:

Brulan Broweleit is the Steward of Talinie. He is the third son of Munro Broweleit, his older brother being Iain Broweleit, Lord of Cunningham.

Brulan was a bright child, and there were some hopes that he might make something of himself in the clergy of the Northern Imperial Temple. Brulan showed no piety, but he did take to the stewardship of his father's lands. Munro found he could leave his son in charge of his lands when he and Iain went off to fight the goblins. During the hostilities between Boeruine and Avanil in 1499-1501, Brulan was only twenty years old, but Munro organized a company for hire (including both Iain and the middle son, Errol Broweleit) and left his estates in Brulan's hands. Brulan reformed the feudal taxes collected in Cunningham, eliminating old dues that the peasants found difficult to pay, and replacing them with new dues that focused on the peasant's least difficult forms and times of wealth creation. He employed an old law that permitted manors to mint pennies, and began circulating very small value coins in Cunningham. The peasants found that these few coins were especially useful right before the harvest, when their wealth was still in the ground, but their store of supplies were running low. When Lord Munro and his sons returned, they found the lands happier, more prosperous, and producing more tax revenues than ever before.

Lord Munro resumed his own direction of Cunningham, but he also endeavored to place Brulan in the office of the Steward. Fairly quickly, Brulan rose to be Assistant Steward. As the Steward aged, Brulan took the step of arranging for the Thane to appoint him to an intendency. As Intendent of Winter's Deep, Brulan had the opportunity to directly impliment the Thane's policy, and earn the Thane's notice. When the Steward died, Brulan was named as his successor. As Steward himself, Brulan improved the organization of Talinie's management of its mint. He separated the Thane's household from the government, so that members of the household are only responsible for the court's provisioning and staffing. The government is only responsible for state functions.
