Longhouse

Rjurik nobles live in longhouses.
The center of Rjurik life is the farm. Cities are few, and 90% or more of the people are rural. The center of the farm is the house. The longhouse is made of wood with a thatch roof. A typical wealthy man's longhouse is 30 yards long and 8 yards wide. In his longhouse a wealthy man houses his retainers, his family, and his animals. Twenty to thirty people living in a longhouse is not uncommon. In some areas, where settlement is long established and the nobles are wealthy, longhouses have been made from stone. Surrounding the longhouse are the homes of followers, tenants, other others who seek a home near the great man. At further remove from the longhouse are the homes of the independent farmers, the bondi.
