How about if I could use this site with the browser of my choice?

Hi there,

I'd love to contribute to this site but I don't want to have to start
up Netscape everytime to do so. So could you puhleaze implement some
mechanism for browsing this site without the "cute" navigation menus
at the top? They don't even show up in other browsers (Opera, w3m,
Konqueror) leaving me with absolutely no way to get at any content
except that listed amongst the "newest additions". Just put some
alternative, HTML-only links at the bottom of the page for me to get
around and I'll be happy.

As i would love to make BRnet available for everyone with somewhat every browser, it is unfortunately to say it is impossible to do so.
Buti will take a look into it...

97% of the visitors (or even more if you ignore the offlline browsers) are able to look arround.....

if you dont want to start your netscape to contribute you can always send it to me or one of the other 200 members that have access to the writers guild.

I am sure we would help you post something but it seems like your a bit lazy if you don't want to bring up netscape and it would be asking an awful lot to have Arjan or someone else take their time to post for you when you could use netscape if you really wanted to. Unless I am missing something it doesn't seem like a big deal. By the way I am one of the many Microsoft Internet explorer users.

How does netscape 6 work with the site? I know 4.7 has some problems, which is why I use IE5.5, but I haven't tried using netscape 6 yet.

Personally, I don't really care which browser the site is set up for. I use three different browsers, usually all at the one time, so it is fairly easy to just swap over to IE when I come across a site that doesn't work properly with either netscape or Opera.

By the wait, you can't use Opera either, or at least my version doesn't work.

This is the only site I've come across which is completely unusable
Opera... meaning that I actually had to *install* Netscape in the
first place. M$ IE, incidentally, won't run on any of the operating
systems that I use (those being Linux, IRIX and HP-UX mainly), so
that's simply not an option for me. And Netscape... well, it's slow,
it's ugly, and so on. And, IMHO making sites which are only accesible
by certain browsers is just poor style. It's called the world-wide web,
not the Micro$oft-wide web (though I assure you that Mr. Gates dreams
about THAT one every night).

Oh BTW, I'm not too surprised about those statistics... for all
appearances, this site is totally contentless unless your using M$IE
or Nutscrape, and if a site doesn't seem to have any content, people
just don't come back. That's why you don't get hits by browsers other
than M$IE, Nutscrape and Bots. Nevermind that Opera pretends to be
M$IE by default.

Alas it seems that 3E Birthright is akin to the Browser wars! No one can agree on a standard version! ;)

I was once an avid Netscape fan, and vocal detractor of IE. However, as I developed web design skills, I found that IE (for all it's problems and security issues) is the superior browser of choice. Not because it is the best designed or prettiest, but simply because it works with the vast majority of web sites.

Netscape wouldn't recognize much of the HTML tags (not too mention a fondness for crashing in mid browse), while IE consistently deciphered the combination of characters between those little pointy thingy a ma doies. I've never had a crash with IE either come to think of it...


The point is, damn the man to be sure! But, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em! It is as mentioned, impossible to cater a web site to work with every browser out there, just as you won't find a half dozen people who agree on the best 3E conversion method for birthright. It's just not going to happen, and if it does, there will be a new guy to come along and totally bung up the system of conformity!

I made the switch to IE 5.5 (now upgraded to 6.0) and don't regret it.

After resolving some major bugs in the msgboard i do have little time left over to configure and test the "new" menu that supports more browsers. I will upload them when i am satified they work as i want them to work.

I agree with Tirion completely. It is not a matter of being lazy. I primarily use Linux and would definitely repfer using Opera. The reason that Internet Abhorer works with so many of the websites today is not because it is so compliant with W3C standards, it is because so many people are using tools like Front Page and M$ Word to create their pages. These tools embed MicroSloth specific code into their pages, thereby necessitating the use of their non-standards compliant browser.
