And I agree. I recently compiled a list of all the true mages on
Cerilia (as provided in the TSR materials). Out of 154 wizards who can
cast true magic, only three are archmages (18+ level). These are Grand
Mistress Lleddra from the Rjurik Highlands, the Magian and Lord of
Ghouls (el-Shighül) of Khinasi. Can anyone give me similar info in
comparison with Forgotten Realms' main continent?

Out of curiosity, what do you guys think consititutes a "high level"
character? To me, you are pretty much into "high level" around 10th-12th
level. 9th might even be around the cut off point.
If that's the case there really are a lot of high level characters in BR. Oh,
they aren't coming out of the woodwork like FR, but there are still a lot of
them.

IMO, levels 1-4 are "low level." 5-8 are "mid-level" 9-14 are "high level" and
15-20 are really high level. 20+ is god or FR level. I feel that most
adventurers fall into the low-mid level range. They either die before high level,
or get tired of running around killing evil mosters and such. High level
charachters not only show exceptional ability, but excetional determination. To
reach 15-20th level, a charachter needs to either adventure 24/7 or have some way
of extending his lifespan (for humans). Which brings up a question (two actually
but #2 deserves its own thread): How do all those high level human mages live
long enough to attain such levels. They could make potions of longevity and
vigor, but I though those were priestily magical items? And how come there aren't
priests of 39th level in FR? I'm getting a little off topic here so I think I'll
stop.

Ignoring the fact that some dragons are arch-wizards. But we all know
how dangerous dragons can be and should be.

I'm not disagreeing with you. The reason I prefer BR to FR is because of the
more reasonable levels of characters. My point is that there really are fair
number of high level characters running around in BR too. I don't think that's
a bad thing at all. To me, the character levels in BR are pretty intelligently
set up.
BR does have it's high level guys of extreme power, however. The Magien and his
troop of followers, for instance, are a pretty incredible force.
