    Magician 5e

    Hello,

posted my take on the 5e magician on the 5e wiki.

Tried first a half-caster variant (same spell progression as a paladin) with all of the diviner and illusionist powers which was a bit too good before settling on this version.

it now feels a bit underwhelming to me, it is maybe suituable as an npc class, even if 5e has done away with that concept.

Ah, you beat me to it. I was working on one myself and hoping to post in the next week. Yours is actually quite similar to what i was thinking.

At first glance, i think it's quite good- faithful in theme to the original (which was one of my own goals).

As for underwhelming, i will give it some thought but at first thought i would disagree. Illusions and divinations can be quite potent when used properly. But i'll poke through over the next while and give some more detailed thoughts when i have a chance.

    For now, good job!

I don't play 5e but is there any restriction on what wizard/arcane spells your 5e Magician can cast? It seems you have given it bonuses according to illusion and divination spells, but I see nothing to say that it can't cast spells from other fields of magic. What would set this class aside from a class for a blooded mage of true magic?

I am glad you included some Shadow Magic aspects as well. This was one area that was really under-implemented in the original rules and this class just asks to be the specialist for it, like Halflings are the specialist race. Could The Third Eye be used to heighten awareness of gateways to the Shadow World (or even when the party has stepped into the Shadow World)? It need not be everything that a halfling has with their Shadow Sense, but with the illusion speciality they should be better at seeing through the veil than most.

Tahliat did include a line under spellcasting ability of You can only learn 3rd level or higher spells if they are divination or illusion spells.

I am not sure if that would preclude a magicican from casting true magic from a scroll or other device- not sure how that works in 5E.

    Thanks!

I made the reference to the inability to gain spells outside the schools of divination and illusion bold for clarity.

Scrolls can only be read if the spell is on your class’s spell list, so that renders magicians incapable of reading true magic scrolls.

I am in the process of creating some unique spells to address the interactions with the shadow world which would surely fall inside the Illusionists area of expertise.

Have a look at http://www.birthright.net/forums/sho...e=Shadow_Magic . You might want to think about where the border between Magician and Halfling and Shadow Mage/Master of shadow magic lies.
