Vladimir is a very harsh instructor, often personally administering beatings as punishment for failure. His brutal methods, although having cost the lives of several clan members, have melded the Knights of the Waves into a very effective fighting force. Clan members spend four out of every twelve weeks at the Barracks and the rest serving on one of the clan?s two galleons. During their four week stint at the Barracks, the Knights also see duty as guards and bouncers for several of Albiele Town?s businesses. The Knights are confident, almost arrogant, but few people make trouble with this dangerous clan.
The Barracks itself is a large, single storey square building with a sizable open area in the center. Most of the interior of the building is quarters for the clan members currently staying here, but there are also numerous training rooms, two armories, quarters for the clan?s captains and Vladimir and a general activities room where Knights? members spend a fair portion of their spare time. When out drinking, the Knights? favor Albiele Town?s two rougher taverns (Bounty Of The Sea, 12, and Albiele?s Pride, 15). The open, interior courtyard is where the Knights? undergo most of their training, with Vladimir watching for the slightest mistake.
At any given time there are at least 50 Knights members quartered at the Barracks (this number can rise as high as 150 if both captains and their crews are in town). One in every ten Knights is a tsarevno, a Vos term essentially meaning ?under chieftain? (tsarevno is used when the subject is male and tsarevna is the female variation). The rest of the clan?s members fall into one of two groups: those trained as swordsmen, called vuskers (a Vos word meaning ?talon? or ?claw?), and the zrato raviskors (a descriptive phrase that loosely translates as ?whispered death?), who specialize in the longbow.
All Knights members wear similar uniforms, with only slight differences to separate the tsarevnos, vuskers and zrato raviskors. It consists of very tight grey leggings and a long sleeved, belted tunic. Heavy black boots and matching black gauntlets complete the uniform. The forearms of the tunic, which are the only areas not covered by the chain mail when it is worn, are each decorated with a black, embroidered symbol representing the rank of the wearer. For the vuskers, this is a spread talon and a laughing human skull identifies the zrato raviskors. The tsarevnos are easily recognized in that they have no symbol on their tunics.
