The terror of the Dragon Isles is the Vilbalang. Close to fifty feet long and armed with a mouth of razor teeth, this monster hunts in the waters just beyond the Dragon Islands. While normally feeding on the massive Audax, the Vilbalang seems to delight in shattering fishing boats and devouring their crews. Luckily for the Dragon Islanders, the creature dislikes shallow water and rarely comes into the shoals where the small fishing boats work.

The Vilbalang are a favorite prey of the hunting dragons and in the myths of the islanders, the Vilbalang and the Dragon are always portrayed as opposites: one a creature of the rock and fire, the other of the sea and cold, one protective and wise, the other predatory and animalistic. When they see the rare dragon returning to the mountains with a Vilbalang in its jaws, they rejoice and their faith is restored.
Albrecht Danig, the 'Lord-Librarian' of Danigau and scholar of all things monsterous, claims that the Vilbalang are actually creations of the dragons, bred to be the perfect prey. Certainly, the creatures seem strangely attracted to the Dragon Islands and have never been encountered more than 150 miles from their shores.

Combat:
The Vilbalang attack all but the largest passing ships, attempting to overturn them or smash holes in their sides. With larger ships, it attempts to snatch victims off the sides or knock them into the water with its tail.

Improved Grab (ex): To use this ability, a Vilbalang must hit a Huge or smaller opponent with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a freeaction without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can try to swallow the foe the following round.
Swallow Whole (ex): A Vilbalang can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of Huge or smaller size by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 2d8+8 points of crushing damage plus 8 points of acid damage per round from the Vilbalang's gizzard. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by dealing 25 points of damage to the Vilbalang's gizzard (AC 22). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. The Vilbalang's gizzard can hold 2 Huge, 8 Large, 32 Medium, 128 Small or 512 Tiny or smaller creatures.
Keen Scent (Ex): Vilbalangs can detect creatures by scent in a 360-foot radius and can detect blood in the water at a range of up to 1 mile.
Skills: A Vilbalang receives a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.
