Landgraf (feminine: Landgräfin) is an ancient title among the Brecht for the regents of small realm too small to merit the more common Pfalzgraf. The word comes from the combination of land and count, indicating a ruler who had governance of the whole land, meaning a sovereign count.
Landgraf would be below a Markgraf, but above a provincial graf. Some Anuirean counts rule over realms, such as Taeghas or Cariele, and would be of the same rank as a Landgraf.
The adjectival prefix "Landgrafen" means "pertaining to a Landgraf" and is typically attached to the word in question. Such as, "Landgrafenburg" for the castle of the Pfalzgraf.
A Landgraf's province is generally referred to as a Landgrafschaft.
