Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition
Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition or D&D 4ed is a version of the Dungeons & Dragons, a role-playing game from the Wizards of the Coast. It is very different from the previous versions of the gaming system. It is based around its own System Reference Document, rather than the D20 system.
In summary, some of the major rule changes since 3rd edition are:
The Birthright Campaign Setting was originally set up for AD&D 2ed. In order to allow fans to continue their Birthright enjoyment, the Wizards of the Coast has given permission to the community at http://www.birthright.net to discuss Birthright in their forum and to develop the D&D 3.5 BRCS and associated documents (e.g the Atlas of Cerilia).
However, the future of Birthright with D&D 4ed is uncertain. No indication has been made that Wizards will release any documents relating to a 4ed version of Birthright. Many Birthright fans have been speculating on how best Birthright rules could be managed in D&D 4ed, but none have produced any new Birthright ruleset. No fansite will be sanctioned by Wizards.
To quote the Game System License (GSL) FAQ (published Feb 2009) for D&D 4ed:
The fan site policy was released in August 2009 with a fan site toolkit which contains a small number of associated images.
Birthright is still copyrighted to Wizards of the Coast.
In summary, some of the major rule changes since 3rd edition are:
- Characters have access to feats and skill, rather than proficiences
- New combat calculations, replacing THAC0
